Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I am excited to share with you that my first bill, House Bill 1819, was signed into law this morning by Gov. Inslee! Under the new law, individuals who make an appointment to inspect a campaign’s or candidate’s account books would need to present photo identification at the time of the appointment. It passed the Legislature with strong bipartisan support and will take effect July 26.
I am proud that my first bill signed into law protects public disclosure and enhances personal privacy and security. Often, campaign treasurers are friends or family members – volunteers – who maintain these account books from their home. I fully support the disclosure process, but we should also make sure the people coming to inspect the records are who they say they are and we know who we are allowing into our homes.
In this day and age, we should always be looking for ways to protect people’s privacy, especially when it comes to finances and the sensitive information contained in these account books. I believe this bill proves we can support public disclosure while protecting personal privacy and safety.
With just a few days left in the 2015 regular session, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve you in Olympia. With much work left to be done, I remain committed to being a strong voice for the needs and values of the 17th District. I ask that you keep in touch with me throughout the remainder of session and the year.
Yours in Service,
Lynda Wilson
