Rep. Lynda Wilson’s Legislative Update | Final update of 2016

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It has been nearly one month since the 2016 session adjourned. I have enjoyed being back in the 17th District meeting with community leaders and groups to discuss issues facing our state and region. Working together we can achieve great things and make Washington a better place for everyone.

As your state representative, I have advocated for a more accountable and efficient state government that prioritizes spending and lives within its means. These past two years were marked by a spirit of compromise not seen in Olympia in quite some time. This approach lead to major victories for students, families, and the most vulnerable members of our communities.

In my first term, the Legislature convened four special sessions – three in 2015 alone – however, the results were largely positive. Through hard work and principled leadership, we were able to fight off major tax increases proposed by Gov. Inslee and House Democrats. I am proud to report we left Olympia having defeated a proposed capital gains tax – which is a gateway to a state income tax – while making solid investments in mental health services and moving closer to fulfilling our basic education obligations required by the constitution.

A priority of mine heading into 2017 is encouraging job growth in our state. One step we must take is reducing agency rules and regulations that make it difficult for employers to add jobs. For far too long the Legislature has passed on its rule-making authority to unelected bureaucrats at state agencies. I will continue to fight for stronger legislative oversight of this process and work to eliminate rules that are outdated and counterproductive.

Since 2016 is an election year, this is the final email update I am able to send until late December. Fortunately, I can respond directly to constituents who contact my office. I stand ready to help you navigate state government and look forward to answering your questions. During the coming months, I hope you will take time to contact me to share your comments, concerns, and ideas. Also, if you would like me to speak to your community group, school, or business, please contact my office to make arrangements.

It is an honor to serve you in the state House of Representatives.

Yours in service,

Lynda Wilson
